PURO Lighting & A New Dawn for UV Disinfection
Ultra Violet technology and disinfection now play a central role in an array of different settings, ranging from hospital patient rooms to the finishing on OXO packaging. As such, several manufacturers in the UV industry have spearheaded significant progress. PURO Lighting is undoubtedly one of the sector’s flag bearers.
As a leading company in the field of UV-C, the Colorado-based organization has developed a first-of-its-kind PURONet UV Disinfection Control System to support medical applications like never before. UV Reporter sat down with company CEO Brain Stern to learn more about how it can open the door to safer spaces.
PURO Lighting & The Role Of UV Disinfection
Since launching in 2019 by a team of industry veterans, PURO Lighting has quickly established itself as a major name in the UV disinfection arena and has developed products to disinfect medical spaces with up to 99.9% inactivation of all pathogens, including viruses and bacteria. SARS-CoV-2 has been the main talking point of the past two years, but it additionally kills MRSA and other dangerous viruses.
Stern confirms that the pandemic has brought far greater interest in the implementation of UV tech, which has been a catalyst for facilitating PURO’s quick growth and progress. He explains: “COVID-19 has brought investment and interest into many technologies that can improve the air in indoor spaces. We expect this to continue for some time as people and companies are even more aware of their indoor building health, and how they keep occupants safe.
“There are three main subdivisions of the UV Spectrum: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C is the most commonly deployed band for surface, air and water disinfection. When used safely, UV-C technology is easily one of the most proven of these technologies.”
Stern additionally confirms that the benefits of choosing UV disinfection over alternative methods are fourfold, with the first being the use of safer chemicals “which means it’s usually safer for people using the cleaned spaces and people who are deploying the disinfection technologies”. He also cites the fact that pathogens do not become UV resistant, UV disinfection’s ability to inactive pathogens rather than simply trap them, and decades of research into the safe deployment of UV-C as reasons behind its preference for manufacturers, patients, and care providers alike.
Despite the benefits over alternative disinfection, Stern does warn that “guidance from regulatory bodies is limited, so I would always recommend discussing your options with a few UV Lighting companies. Asking for data and potentially asking for assistance reviewing the data from an expert at a university or hospital could go a long way”.
The Changing Face Of Disinfection Control Systems
UV-C has generally seen a widespread increase in its integration with other safe technologies for a range of settings, and PURO Lighting has embraced this. Stern says:
“PURO UV Disinfection Lighting manufactures a wide variety of UV lighting products, based on a number of proven and safe UV technologies.
“We focus on in-room solutions that improve air quality in occupied spaces (perfect for schools, medical facilities, and long-term care) HVAC solutions that use UV technology to purify the air circulating through buildings, and powerful, full-spectrum UV products that are important tools for healthcare and hospitals as they protect their patients and staff from HAIS.”
As UV-C disinfection continues to play an increasingly important role in protecting patients and people in medical, public, and home settings, the demand for improved usability has been evident. Stern says this has been a key feature of PURO’s approach to developing UV tech and applications and concludes: “With the introduction of PURONet, the products are now also the safest and intuitive application for our facilities, environmental services, and operating room front-line staff.”
“PURONet’s UV disinfection technology provides an added layer of safety and security for patients and healthcare providers. It ultimately revolutionizes the way hospitals disinfect their operating rooms.”
In fact, Children’s Mercy Kansas City Director of Engineering, Adam Zorn, commented that PURONet’s UV Disinfection Control System has provided an intuitive system that is effectively protecting both patients and front-line staff in the hospital’s operating rooms.
Through the combination of advanced UV-C technologies and easy control system management, healthcare teams can now manage situations by killing airborne and surface bacteria with greater speed and accuracy than ever before.
